“Christmas time is no time for Congress to tell more than one million … Americans that they have lost their … insurance, which is what will happen if Congress does not act before they leave on their holiday vacation.” So said Barack Obama, though he was talking about unemployment “insurance.” Obama continued, “These programs are almost always temporary means for hard-working people to stay afloat while they try to find a new job or are going to school to retrain themselves for the jobs that are out there.” That’s undoubtedly true in many cases, but Democrats argue that unemployment benefits are one of the main drivers of economic activity. Saying that people without jobs living off the labor of others drives economic growth is a bizarre argument to make. And perhaps he should have thought about Christmas when he signed a law causing tens of millions of Americans to lose their health insurance.
