House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi offered her lawless take on immigration: “Our view of the law is that it – if somebody is here without sufficient documentation, that is not reason for deportation.” To be sure it was understood this wasn’t a misstatement, her spokesman reiterated that it was “a restatement of her long-held belief that being an undocumented immigrant is not a basis for deportation.” The problem with this view is that immigration reform is likely on the docket next year in Congress. What possible assurance can conservatives have that the law will be enforced – no matter what border security elements are in the final bill – if Democrats’ platform position now is that illegal entry and presence in the country isn’t an offense worthy of deportation?
