“Insurance companies are still trying to sort out cases of so-called health insurance orphans, customers for whom the government has a record that they enrolled, but the insurer does not,” reports the AP. All told, at least 13,000 people qualify for this “orphan” status. But it gets worse: There’s no automated way for insurance companies to cross-check their lists with government lists. That means either the companies must painstakingly do so manually, or the supposed customer will find out they don’t have viable insurance when visiting the doctor.
