From the “Dumb and Dumber” file: The U.S. Navy’s under fire for inadvertently sending an internal missive to a reporter pursuing details on the Navy Yard shooting under a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The memo prescribes a variety of elusive tactics to employ when unwelcome inquiries are submitted. According to the dispatch, officials characterized this particular reporter’s request as a “fishing expedition,” adding, “Just because they are media doesn’t mean the memos shed light on specific government activities.” The embarrassment prompted this apology on Twitter: “#USNavy regrets the content of an internal email sent to @nbcwashington cc @politico @Gawker.” What they’re really sorry about is a leak that revealed the Navy’s ploy to make inconvenient truths cease and desist.
