Henry Waxman (D-Beverly Hills) will face a popular challenger in this year’s primary, Marianne Williamson, best-selling author, friend of Oprah and spiritual adviser to millions. Dedicating her fundraisers “to all that is good … [and] the fulfillment of love,” she says getting politically involved could be “a transformation in your life,” an “act of love” for country and others. Although she has little chance of victory, she’s passionate about her platform: fighting a corrupt system of two parties supported by big corporations, poverty, mass incarceration of blacks and Latinos, government spying, income inequality and “corruption of our food supply.” The district includes some of the nation’s richest and politically active people, including many entertainers. Although Waxman is vulnerable, he seems unconcerned. “I have a long record of accomplishments,” he says, citing his leadership on climate change, tobacco regulation and the Affordable Care Act.“ But the race may be entertaining all the same.
