Nineteen Senate Democrats signed on to an amicus brief in support of the Obama administration in its effort to coerce Hobby Lobby and other Christian-run businesses into buying insurance that complies with the contraception mandate. The effort is a strange one because the mandate makes the administration look heavy handed and arbitrary, and as Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey explains, “All it does is tie the HHS contraception mandate around the necks of Senate Democrats, especially those whose fates are already hanging by a thread this cycle.” Note that no Democrats in tight elections signed on, but don’t expect them to get away clean. When your party is in the sewer, you’re going to get some on you.
