Tonight’s State of the Union address will feature plenty of declarations of executive authority to bypass Congress in order to “get things done.” One such item is that Barack Obama will unilaterally raise the minimum wage to $10.10 per hour for federal contract workers. That’s a 39% boost over the current rate of $7.25, and it works out to 7% per year since the last minimum wage hike in 2009 – far outpacing wage growth for everyone else. This likely won’t affect a large number of workers, but it will mean that federal spending will have to go up to accommodate the change.
