We expected Republicans to cave on the debt ceiling, but they did so even before voting on anything. When it became evident there weren’t 218 votes to be gotten, House leadership abandoned proposals to link the debt ceiling increase to either approval of the Keystone pipeline or eliminating the insurance company bailout portion of ObamaCare. Granted, neither provision was going to pass the Senate and both were meant to force Democrats into embarrassing votes. Furthermore, raising the debt ceiling is a foregone conclusion this go-around. But Republican “leadership” is displaying remarkable disunity and lack of direction at a time when the opposite is needed.
