Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) wrote a joint letter to the NFL complaining that the name of the Washington Redskins “disparages” Native Americans and should be changed. The NFL is “on the wrong side of history,” they lectured. The team returned that kick with its own statement: “[T]here are many challenges facing Native Americans, including an extremely cold winter with high energy bills, high unemployment, life threatening health problems, inadequate education and many other issues more pressing than the name of a football team which has received strong support from Native Americans.” Indeed, one would think Congress had better things to do than blitz a football team, but at least that’s a play on which they’ll gain the fewest yards.
