In the wake of Sandy Hook, New York passed a law last year banning so-called “assault weapons.” Of course, the law focused on cosmetic features like pistol grips, adjustable stocks and flash suppressors, so the results were predictable. Gun manufacturers have designed an AR-15 pattern rifle that is completely legal because it doesn’t have those cosmetic features. Functionally, it’s the same rifle. But as National Review’s Charles C.W. Cooke put it, “Pass a stupid law, get a stupid result.”
