Barack Obama has made a fine art of the practice of nominating big campaign donors to serve as ambassadors. Sometimes, it becomes a spectacle, such as when Obama’s nominee to serve in Argentina revealed that he’d never even been there. And the practice has been scrutinized enough lately that the White House has grown defensive. Press Secretary Jay Carney insisted that the president had selected “qualified nominees across the board.” Furthermore, he explained, “Being a donor to the president’s campaign does not guarantee you a job in the administration. But it does not prevent you from getting one either.” That’s an understatement given that more than half of Obama’s picks have gone to $500,000-plus campaign bundlers.
