The EPA has issued another regulation, this one in the form of new rules governing sulfur levels in gasoline. The so-called Tier 3 rules (third in a series) mandate cutting sulfur by 60%, which, Reuters reports, “should also reduce tailpipe and evaporative emissions from cars, light and medium-duty trucks and some heavy-duty vehicles.” The EPA claims these regulations will prevent up to 2,000 premature deaths annually, as well as 50,000 cases of children with respiratory ailments – all for the bargain price of 1 cent per gallon of gas. Who could oppose such a sensible regulation? In reality, the rules will almost surely cost far more than 1 cent per gallon, and they will cause a domino effect in the economy as people pay more at the pump and for everything that requires transport, such as food. But surely the EPA wouldn’t overestimate the benefits…
