We recently reported on 10-year-old Nathan Entingh who was handed a three day suspension from Devonshire Elementary School for the heinous crime of “aiming” his “look-alike firearm” (gun-shaped hand) at another student. That disciplinary action was upheld on Monday after being reviewed by a hearing officer, though the offense was re-characterized as a “volatile act.” Entingh’s family will now take the matter up with the school board, and if necessary, the courts. This egregious story doesn’t end there, however. According to The Columbus Dispatch, “Devonshire officials again called the family last week to discuss that a teacher’s aide had discovered that Nathan, 10, had drawn a trident, swords and a bow and arrow in his notebook.” Fortunately, no disciplinary action was taken, but the fact school officials further fueled such nonsense is alarming enough. Zero-tolerance policies’ shameful history in our schools continues.
