The House passed Paul Ryan’s latest budget Thursday by a narrow vote of 219-205. No Democrats supported it, while 12 Republicans opposed it. Still, that marks an improvement over his December budget deal with Sen. Patty Murray, which drew the opposition of 62 GOP House members. Ryan’s “Path to Prosperity” plan is to eliminate the deficit over a decade, primarily by technocratic streamlining of expenditures, which would boost the economy by reducing the burden of government. Spending $5.1 trillion less than current projections would certainly be a start. Of course, the plan stands no chance in the Senate, but is rather a symbolic platform Republicans can campaign from this year. Nancy Pelosi pulled out an old anti-Vietnam slogan to describe Ryan’s plan: “not good for children and other living things.” And that may be all you need to know.
