The Department of Homeland Security has warned the public to change passwords in the wake of news of the so-called “Heartbleed” bug, saying that people are vulnerable to hackers. In other news, the National Security Agency knew about the Heartbleed bug for at least two years, while they used it for hacking. Once the news broke regarding the bug and patches were forthcoming, however, the NSA knew the gig was up and they might as well have DHS issue its “oh by the way” warning. Unfortunately, in the intervening two years, the agency whose mission is ostensibly to keep the American people safe left everyone wide open to hacking by those even more malicious than Big Government.

Update: Naturally, the NSA denies knowledge of the bug, saying, “Reports that say otherwise are wrong.” National Security Council spokesperson Caitlin Hayden added, “If the federal government, including the intelligence community, had discovered this vulnerability prior to last week, it would have been disclosed to the community responsible for OpenSSL.” Color us skeptical.
