Dartmouth College president Philip J. Hanlon had stern words for the student body there this week, saying, “There is a grave disconnect between our culture in the classroom and the behaviors outside of it – behaviors which too often seek not to elevate the human spirit, but debase it.” He added, “Routinized excessive drinking, sexual misconduct, and blatant disregard of social norms have no place at Dartmouth. Enough is enough.” We’d just point out that the system is designed to yield the very results it’s getting. When you strip morality or objective truth from the educational process, as institutions of higher education have for decades, the eventual result is a culture without either of those things. Hanlon shouldn’t be surprised; he and his fellow administrators should look in the mirror.
