In 2010, Barack Obama slammed the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United as “not just a threat to Democrats,” but “a threat to our democracy.” But that was before Democrats found the decision to be politically expedient. Some affiliates of Harry Reid are inconspicuously working toward making states, specifically swing states, comply with the rules laid out under Citizens United. Why? Jonathan Levy, executive director of the major General Majority PAC, explains that the PAC’s goal is “to counteract the bottomless pockets of people like the Koch brothers. Led by our partners from labor, we beat them in New Jersey, and we expect to keep taking the fight to them wherever it’s needed.” In other words, Democrats are ostensibly fighting against Citizens United while simultaneously using it to bolster their advocacy groups.
