The political fight of the summer could very well be immigration reform. CQ Roll Call reports some in Congress want to hash out legislation by August. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) said, “The legislative process in essence, frankly, has to work on deadlines. There’s a deadline. And the deadline is that if we don’t get it done by August it doesn’t happen. If Congress doesn’t act by the August break, the president is going to do something. And once that happens … the possibility of any further negotiations … disintegrate[s].” While the August deadline may keep Republicans involved in the law-writing process, Democrats have the most to gain by the legislation right before a tough election, and it’s worth remembering that Barack Obama can’t be trusted with enforcement.
