The Patriot Post® · It's Far Bigger Than a 'Gay' Football Player

Michael Sam is set to be the NFL’s first openly homosexual player after being drafted by the St. Louis Rams over the weekend. Sam “came out” while staring as an all-SEC defensive end for the Missouri Tigers. He has now joined a small handful of other major-sport professional athletes as a poster child for the homosexual agenda and the push to remake our culture.

Sam didn’t impress enough at the Scouting Combine (tryouts) to merit being chosen higher than the seventh round, but many in the Leftmedia were eager to attribute that to “homophobia” in the NFL. Just imagine if he hadn’t been chosen. Yet the hoopla surrounding his selection is just a taste of the media circus Sam will bring to St. Louis and every city the Rams visit – whether he can actually play football in the NFL is secondary. But if Sam can make it on the merits, then good for him. It shouldn’t be about which team he plays for off the field.

The treatment of Sam and of anyone who vocalizes a dissenting view is a huge double standard when compared to, say, Tim Tebow, who was roundly criticized for his outspoken Christian faith during his brief NFL career. Tebow is not currently playing in the league, thanks at least in part to the media distraction he had become. Among the Leftmedia elite, it was acceptable to savage Tebow, but a grave sin to do anything other than give fawning approval to Sam.

Indeed, the PC Police have already swung into action. Miami Dolphins safety Don Jones tweeted “OMG” and “Horrible” after Sam’s draft and subsequent graphic on-screen kiss with his boyfriend. The Dolphins fined Jones an undisclosed amount and he is suspended from all team activities until he completes “educational training,” which might as well be known as re-education camp. Jones was quick to offer a mea culpa, saying, “I want to apologize to Michael Sam for the inappropriate comments that I made last night on social media. I take full responsibility for them and I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment.”

The NFL no doubt hopes Jones’ punishment will serve as a warning of what appears to be a zero-tolerance policy on freedom of thought. Such has become the standard practice with the homosexual agenda, no matter the arena. Think back to the public lynching of Phil Robertson of “Duck Dynasty,” Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy and the Boy Scouts. Or of the lawsuits filed against photographers, bakers and florists who dare to conscientiously object to same-sex weddings. Conformity of thought will be enforced.

As columnist David Limbaugh asks, “What if someone believes that the Bible teaches that homosexual behavior is sinful and also believes in following the Bible? Are we getting to the point that Big Brother not only gets to disapprove of such beliefs but also is entitled to punish and muzzle those who subscribe to them? Which is a greater evil and which is a greater threat to our formerly free society, to believe that homosexual behavior is sinful and same-sex marriage ought not to be sanctioned or to ban the expression of such thoughts?”

Not only is our culture growing more perverse in its values, but it’s becoming increasingly hostile to the Judeo-Christian values upon which the nation was founded, and without which its survival is in jeopardy. This isn’t the story of a football player or a sports league, and it’s also not the story of “hate” and “discrimination.” It’s the story of a far bigger battle for our culture and for Liberty.
