Three years at the helm of The New York Times and Jill Abramson is gone. The Grey Lady announced it fired its first female executive editor Wednesday. Dean Baquet replaces Abramson, and will be the paper’s first black executive editor. Adding a twist, The New Yorker reports the firing comes around the time Abramson learned she was paid less than her male predecessor. “I was also told by another friend of Abramson’s that the pay gap with Keller (former NYT editor) was only closed after she complained. But, to women at an institution that was once sued by its female employees for discriminatory practices, the question brings up ugly memories.” When the paper self-professes “progressivism,” you’d think they would have the basic issues, like equal pay, down pat. Update: New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. says it was “simply not true” that Abramson was paid less than her predecessor. Before or after her raise?
