The Justice Department said it would release the secret memo describing it’s reasoning for killing American citizen and al-Qaida member Anwar al-Awlaki with a drone – but too late for any common citizen to read the paper and inform their representatives what to do about it. The paper will be released after the Senate votes on the nomination of David Barron, who wrote the secret memos and is nominated by Barack Obama to a seat on the First U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) opposes the nomination of Barron, saying, “[T]here is no legal precedent for killing American citizens not directly involved in combat.” While the timing of the release is unfortunate, the release of the papers themselves is necessary for a free people to govern themselves. Mark Udall (D-CO) said, “This is a welcome development for government transparency and affirms that although the government does have the right to keep national security secrets, it does not get to have secret law.” More…
