While Jack Nicklaus’s golf career is an impressive one, his 18 championship wins do not qualify him for a Congressional Gold Medal. At least that’s the opinion of 10 House Republicans who voted against giving the Golden Bear one of the highest civilian honors in the land “in recognition of his service to the Nation in promoting excellence, good sportsmanship, and philanthropy.” Nay-voter Reid Ribble (R-WS) said, “I just don’t know that being able to hit a white ball around a golf course while earning millions of dollars is deserving of a gold medal.” While Thomas Massie (R-KY) told CQ Roll Call he entered Congress to fix the debt, “not because a golf pro was in need of a gold medal.” The measure passed 371-10 despite the freshmen Republicans bucking the lemming-votes of Congress, and the House moved to the next resolution: giving the same award to American Fighter Aces.
