After a statist revision in the House, The USA Freedom Act, a bill designed to shrink the tendrils of the NSA, passed 303-121. But after the House adopted vague wording by request of the Obama administration, privacy advocates and tech companies like Google and Facebook withdrew support from the bill. The author of The USA Freedom Act, Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WS) – who also wrote The Patriot Act – said the NSA’s indiscriminate data collection will cease, but added the bill is imperfect. “The privacy groups who are upset about lost provisions, I share your disappointment,” Sensenbrenner said. “This bill still does deserve support. Don’t let the perfect become the enemy of the good.” The good might not be good enough. Like Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) said: “[W]e have learned that if we leave any ambiguity in the law, the intelligence agencies run a truck right through that ambiguity.” More…
