The Obama administration secretly unveiled plans for a two-state system in Hawaii: different governments for the native Islanders – who are U.S. Citizens – and non-native islanders. Congress has failed to take up the subject in “the Akaka bill,” so the administration is considering whether or not to treat native islanders differently “to more effectively implement the special political and trust relationship that Congress has established between that community and the United States.” Gail Heriot, who sits on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, told The Daily Caller, “[W]hat’s to prevent creating similar [self-governing racial] groups out of say, Cajuns, or Orthodox Jews or Amish? If you can do that with groups that are already part of the mainstream, you can balkanize the country.” We don’t know what disgusts us more: the secretive moves around Memorial Day, the Executive Branch bypassing Congress, or the Left’s insistence on using race to create factions that are more equal than others.
