Billionaire chocolate magnate Petro Poroshenko won the Ukrainian presidential election over the weekend. He is of the wealthy oligarch class against whom Ukrainians previously revolted, but, as The Wall Street Journal notes, “he supported the February revolution and offered the experience and skills that Ukrainians want in a crisis.” Russian-backed separatists responded by attacking an airport in the eastern part of the country. Poroshenko certainly has his work cut out for him, as it remains to be seen whether the West will back his leadership and whether the Russian bear will call off the attack dogs long enough for real progress to be made.
