The court case Newdow v. United States is one for the money. The Second U.S. Court of Appeals dismissed the case from a group of humanists who argued carrying money with the nation’s motto, “In God We Trust,” forces them to proselytize because it’s “a statement that attributes to them personally a perceived falsehood that is the antithesis of the central tenant of their religious system.” The court’s decision didn’t give the humanists a prayer, citing past case after past case where the court system upheld the motto – even mentioning the newest Supreme Court decision in Town of Greece v. Galloway. While the government must not prohibit or promote a particular religion, the court established the nation’s motto is “ceremonial deism” and a “reference to the country’s religious heritage.” If the G-word offends that much, there’s always the credit card.
