Behind the curtain of the three-ring circus we all called the government shutdown, Barack Obama took a vacation to Africa that cost as much as $100 million. Through yet another FOIA request, Judicial Watch has discovered that the Obamas spent $2 million for lodging, entertainment and security. Flight costs added up to another $8 million. Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, said, “Keep in mind that this outrageously lavish excursion came at the very same time that the president was shutting down White House tours and blaming it on the sequester. As one congressional critic noted at the time, the White House could have 1,350 weeks of tours for the cost of the Obama family’s trip to Africa.” This fact, coupled with the decidedly non-essential nature of the Obamas’ vacation, shows once again that the sequester was used as a political weapon to hurt as many Americans as possible.
