Despite not having a store in Gotham City, Walmart donated $3 million last year to charities in the city, including New York Woman’s Foundation, a few charter schools in the city and the Bailey House, which gives housing to people with HIV/AIDS. It’s free money for a few good causes – what’s not to love? But the New York’s City Council in all its wisdom treated these donations worse than the crack cocaine flowing into their dump along the Hudson. The council sent a letter to Walmart, signed by 26 of the 51 leaders of the Knickerbockers, intended to cut those capitalists down to size for daring try to do good – good! – in the city with their own money. “We know how desperate you are to find a foothold in New York City to buy influence and support here,” the 26 wrote. “Stop spending your dangerous dollars in our city. That’s right: this is a cease-and-desist letter.” Holy mackerel, Batman! Attacking a charity because it doesn’t fit into your political plans?
