The State Department says 18 to 30 deaths a years to ship oil from Canada’s tar sands by rail is worth not building the Keystone XL pipeline. The department made corrections to its report studying the effects of the proposed pipeline because there were errors in the original. Among the changes, the number of estimated deaths quadrupled and the amount of electricity consumed by the pipeline is less than originally thought. But the State Department stubbornly stands by its report, despite the errors. A spokesperson for the department told Reuters, “The Department has reviewed each of the items listed in the errata sheet and has determined that they have no impact on the integrity of, or the conclusions reached in, the [final report].” When the real world tries to keep the nation’s energy moving, the Obama administration has its head buried in the (tar) sands.
