If it wasn’t for global warming, the nasty row in Syria wouldn’t have happened, according to Barack Obama. The president told New York Times Columnist Thomas Friedman a four-year drought in the country gave rise to the rebellion that is now attempting to topple Bashar al-Assad’s regime, “Which gives you a sense of what happens in a lot of these countries that are just barely hanging on,” Obama said. “They don’t have a lot of margin for error, and that has national security implications. When people are hungry, when people are displaced, when there are a lot of young people, particularly young men, who are drifting without prospects for the future, the fertility of the soil for terrorism ends up being significant. And it can have an impact on us.” So it would have been better if global warming didn’t happen? If the Syrian people lived contentedly under Assad, the man who killed Arab Spring protesters, keeps a network of secret police and controls his nation’s Internet? The Taliban Five certainly don’t care if the average Syrian high is 98 degrees or 99 degrees. More…
