Starbucks will no longer just give its employees minimum wage. It will give them a shot at higher education. The coffee shop chain announced that any of its employees, from the newest hire to the oldest worker, will be able to enroll in online classes at Arizona State University, enabling baristas who put in the work to earn a bachelors degree. Jamie Merisotis, president for the Lumina Foundation, an organization that focuses on education, told The New York Times “Starbucks is going where no other major corporation has gone. For many of these Starbucks employees, an online university education is the only reasonable way they’re going to get a bachelor’s degree.” And for this, we raise our Vente, Java-chip Frappuccino to the company. While the government pushes a minimum wage hike, which will only damage the economy and keep workers in menial jobs, Starbucks found a way to enable its workers to succeed. More…
