The Department of Health and Human Services forgot to ask local communities before it started creating centers to house the influx of Central American children steaming across the border. The community of Lawrenceville, Virginia, learned the feds made plans to house 500 children on the campus of the former St. Paul’s College. But the local government and the areas congressman, Rep. Robert Hurt (R-VA) stepped in to pause the government’s plan. In a statement, Hurt said, “If the HHS plan is indeed good for the people of Lawrenceville and Brunswick County, then they should begin with a transparent and open process that includes the community and the local elected officials every step of the way and ensures compliance with all local, state and federal laws – including the local zoning ordinances of the town of Lawrenceville.” Here’s what’s shocking: The government actually stopped when someone pointed out they were breaking the law.
