Under order of a court, the Obama administration released its 41-page memo explaining its justification of killing U.S. Citizen and al-Qaida leader Anwar al-Awlaki. The justification is not good in terms of national security or personal Liberty. Ars Technica, a technology website, pointed out the memo shows an administration avoiding the protections of the Constitution. “It does not matter whether the strikes target Americans, either,” Ars Technica wrote. “US citizenship, the memo said, does not impose ‘constitutional limitations that would preclude the contemplated lethal action under the facts represented to us by DoD, the CIA, and the Intelligence Community.’” So “the most transparent administration in history” fought for years to keep its reasoning on extra-judiciously killing its citizens a secret. Sure, only the “good guys” – the U.S., Great Britain and Israel – currently operate drones, but what will happen when the likes of Iran, North Korea and China develop the technology? More…
