Bill Clinton defended his wife against allegations that she’s out of touch after she complained of being “dead broke” and not “truly well off.” “It is factually true that we were several million dollars in debt” upon leaving the White House, Bill Clinton insisted. “Everybody now assumes that what happened in the intervening years was automatic. I’m shocked by what’s happened. I’m shocked that people still want me to come give talks.” Especially considering the price he charges. He added, “She’s not out of touch.” To prove their humble origins, Clinton offered, “I think I had the lowest net worth of any American president in the 20th century when I took office.” His “aw-shucks” attitude is a case of protesting too much. Every Democrat – especially the Clintons, it would seem – desires vast wealth while pretending not to have it.
