The Left’s ire against the Washington Redskin’s name has turned against the military because names like “Apache,” “Chinook,” “Black Hawk” and “Tomahawk” are offensive to the more progressive ear. It was only a matter of time. Managing Editor of Boston Review Simon Waxman took to the pages of The Washington Post to write, “Perhaps the senators outraged by the Redskins name could turn their letter-writing pens on the Defense Department next. And when that’s done, there is the more important step, when these senators, and their constituents, choose not only to be offended on behalf of Indians but also to be partners in improving their lives. … The violence is ongoing, even if the guns are silent.” By censuring and stripping all mentions of Native Americans from our culture, we deny the influence the native people had upon this country.
