Gun manufacturer Beretta will move its manufacturing operation to Tennessee when its plant in Gallatin, Tennessee, is finished in 2015. The company began in Italy when it sold 185 arquebus barrels to the Arsenal of Venice in 1526. The maker of the M9 pistol, the gun carried by the U.S. Armed Forces since 1985, announced the move from Maryland, because the “Free State” passed the Firearm Safety Act of 2013, which would have prohibited Beretta from making certain firearms in the state, storing or importing those guns to Maryland customers. General Manager for Beretta USA Jeff Cooper said, “While we were able in the Maryland House of Delegates to reverse some of those obstructive provisions, the possibility that such restrictions might be reinstated in the future leaves us very worried about the wisdom of maintaining a firearm manufacturing factory in the State.” Beretta joins other gun companies leaving locations once known for their rich tradition of gun craft because zealous anti-gun legislators are bad for business.
