Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) thinks the EPA will actually increase the blend requirements for ethanol when releasing its new mandate. “I believe the numbers will be bigger and that’s based not only on conversations with [White House adviser John Podesta] but my conversations with EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy,” Franken said. Thanks both to high prices and more fuel-efficient cars, Americans are using less gasoline than when the mandate was first implemented. Refineries already aren’t able to blend the required amount of ethanol without going beyond what’s recommended for vehicles. Ethanol corrodes engines, and it’s hardly controversial to note that it’s bad for the environment too. The mandate still exists almost solely because of the efforts of the corn lobby. It wasn’t long ago that the EPA relaxed the requirements for the first time in response to reality. If it’s true they’re about to double down, it would be not only disastrous, but insane. More…
