The United States is finally shipping arms to moderate rebel fighters in Syria, but the aid is too little too late. Moderate fighters are fighting both the Syrian Army and the Islamic State of Syria and the Levant. Under the pressure of a drawn-out war and dwindling resources, many moderate rebels are slipping away, some to leave the fighting, others to join ISIL. Noah Bonsey with the International Crisis Group told The Washington Post, “This is as tough a set of conditions as the rebels have ever faced. The new support does not seem quick or extensive or deep enough to enable the mainstream rebels to deal with all these emerging challenges.” Congress could swoop in and fund the rebels an additional $500 million by 2015, but, as The Post notes, “By then, there may be few if any moderate rebels left to aid.” So much for Obama’s red line.
