Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) proposed a six-pence-a-gallon tax on molasses one cent per teaspoon of sugar tax on drinks. The bill is designed to fight obesity and to tax those connoisseurs of soda away from their life of unhealthiness. “People want to be healthy and they want their kids to be healthy,” DeLauro said in a statement, which makes you wonder why she proposed a tax to discourage what people already don’t want to do. She added, “There is a clear relationship between sugar-sweetened beverages and a host of other health conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, obesity and tooth decay.” The Hartford Courant reports the average, 20 oz. bottle of fizz would be taxed 16 cents – such a deterrent – and the money would flow into a fund created by ObamaCare.
