The federal government created 400 new crimes since 2008, according to a report by the Congressional Research Service. Some of them make sense, such as the criminalization of child pornography and sex trafficking. But others leave us scratching our heads. For example, 7U.S. Code § 13-1 makes it a crime to deal in “motion picture box office receipts,” according to the CRS report. Somehow, onions are also mentioned in the same sentence. Go figure. It’s one example where the federal government needs to look back over the last six years to decide if the law actually works. Heritage Foundation’s John S. Baker said in 2008, “The federal government is supposedly a government of limited powers and, therefore, limited jurisdiction. Each new crime expands the jurisdiction of federal law enforcement and federal courts.” More…
