More than 13 inches of rain pummeled the Long Island town of Islip Wednesday, setting a new 24-hour record for New York state. Cities like Baltimore and Detroit likewise broke rainfall records. And all too predictably, the impressive totals have alarmists blaming man-made global warming. “No Global Warming, Huh? LI Town Smashes 24-Hour Record With 13 Inches Of Rain,” read one headline. “If these numbers make you suspect that record heavy rains may be occurring more frequently … due to a changing climate,” wrote meteorologist Jeff Masters, “then you’re in good company.” While excessive rains like that seen in Islip are rare, they’re hardly unprecedented. Climate blogger Steve Goddard tweets, “1979 was [the] coldest year in US history, and also brought the heaviest rainfall – 43 inches in one day” in Alvin, Texas. He also points out, “In 1942, with CO2 at 310 PPM, Pennsylvania received 30 inches of rain in 4-½ hours.” Ironically, you can thank unseasonably cold air in the atmosphere for this week’s washout.
