A new poll by the Chicago Tribune reveals that 55% of poll-takers in the Windy City feel “less safe” now that the law permits concealed carry of firearms. Just 15% said they feel “more safe.” Again this summer, there has been a spate of shootings in Chicago, but here’s a key bit of information: None of those murders was perpetrated by someone with a concealed carry permit. There’s also good news. The number of robberies is down 20%, and even Chicago’s homicide rate is at a 56-year low. It’s too early to say whether this is causation or correlation, but maybe if those answering poll questions knew the facts and didn’t answer out of emotion, the results would have been far different.
