Barack Obama once again reiterated that he has no intention of sending U.S. troops back to Iraq to fight ISIL. “American combat troops will not be returning to fight in Iraq. I will not allow the United States to be dragged back into another ground war in Iraq. Because ultimately it is up to the Iraqis to bridge their differences and secure themselves. The limited strikes we’re conducting have been necessary to protect our people and have helped Iraqi forces begin to push back these terrorists.” The U.S. can indeed do much with selective targeting of ISIL forces, and avoiding a massive and expensive influx of American soldiers. But to Obama, there’s only one important thing: He can’t validate George W. Bush’s actions by sending in ground troops. It would mess up the narrative.
