In 2012, Barack Obama unwisely set a “red line” that, if Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons, it would draw, well, some kind of U.S. response. In the end, all it did was spark some talks and a deal to destroy those weapons. The Wall Street Journal editorialized that all is not well with that deal. “Today’s lesson in the utterly predictable is the report out of the United Nations that Syria may not have declared the whereabouts of all of its chemical weapons. So a regime that denied building a nuclear-bomb facility before the Israelis destroyed it in 2007, and denied using chemical weapons it clearly used against its own people in 2013, may not have told the truth about its stockpiles? Say it ain’t so.” What might be most critical now is ensuring those weapons do not fall into the hands of ISIL, which would gladly turn them against the U.S. or our interests abroad. More…
