Bashar al-Assad’s regime is weakening – even though it’s calling every rebel a terrorist – and his army is losing ground to ISIL. The international community hopes the recent losses will drive Assad to the negotiating table. But it could very well open the way for ISIL to grow in size and strength. “United Nations and Western officials hope to push tentative truce negotiations now under way between the regime and rebels,” The Wall Street Journal reports. “The idea is to persuade both sides – as well as their regional backers, Iran for the regime; Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey for the rebels – that no one can win the war, these officials said during interviews in Syria and Lebanon.” This is another chance for Obama to step up like the Nobel Peace Prize-winning president that he is and lead, instead of standing behind the international community.
