It’s hard to understand what the Obama administration was thinking when it told the family of James Foley not to pay a ransom for their son captured by ISIL, or else it would face prosecution for funding terrorism. Eventually, ISIL beheaded the freelance journalist. Foley’s mother, Diane Foley, told ABC news a military officer who served on the White House National Security Council was the White House’s hatchet man. “Three times he intimidated us with that message. We were horrified he would say that. He just told us we would be prosecuted. We knew we had to save our son, we had to try.” The family of Steven Sotloff, the second journalist beheaded by ISIL, tells a similar story of disregard emanating from the White House. The administration certainly would need greater strategic objectives than allowing families to pay ransom, but these families felt the cold shoulder – not compassion or cooperation. More…
