Many Blacks join the military for upward mobility, to learn skills they can apply once they don civilian clothes once again – and that worries USA Today. The paper breathlessly nailed the military: Most of the top-level brass is white. And there are few blacks in combat leadership that can rise to the top ranks. Hopefully in the next few days, USA Today will release a report investigating how many Hispanics, Irish, Italian and Polish soldiers are in leadership, because it shouldn’t view one race more deserving of equality than others. USA Today writes, “Developing marketable skills has been a key motivation for many African Americans, said David Segal, a military sociologist at the University of Maryland. That has often meant driving a truck, not a tank. ‘There has been a trend among African Americans who do come into the military to gravitate to career fields that have transfer value – that pretty much excludes the combat arms,’ Segal said.” Every race but black decides it’s merry fun to jump out of planes, drive tanks and blow things up, but as the Army commercial says, “You joined the world’s greatest army to become a graphic artist? Outstanding! Now that’s a man with a plan!” More…
