Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has long been a fan of some of the rebel groups in Syria, even posing for a photo-op with them. And he has frequently squabbled with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) who rightly warns that arming rebels such as the Free Syrian Army could end up arming the very jihadis we want to stop. On Sean Hannity’s Fox News program, McCain blustered, “Has Rand Paul ever been to Syria? Has he ever met with ISIS? Has he ever met with any of these people?” We’re pretty sure McCain meant to say “Free Syrian Army” instead of “ISIS,” an alternative acronym for ISIL, but that sort of illustrates the point – the rebels are hard to tell apart, and it’s doubtful whether a significant “moderate” force exists for us to support. Hot Air’s Allahpundit nailed it, saying, “[T]he crux of [McCain’s] argument for this highly risky partnership with unknown fighters in Syria is, in so many words, ‘They told me they’ll be good, so there.’ Can’t imagine a worse spokesman for interventionism.” More…
