NBC’s Matt Lauer asked National Security Advisor Susan Rice, “What happened?” The Obama administration said again and again al-Qaida was “decimated.” But now, we’re back in Iraq, bombing Syria and this scary new group called Khorasan is on the rise. In what is the closest admission to guilt coming from this administration, Rice explained Obama didn’t want to decimate all of al-Qaida. “We’ve been focused,” she said, “on al-Qaida in Afghanistan and Pakistan, what we call al-Qaida core. And that element of al-Qaida, which is the one that hatched the 9/11 plot and executed it, has been substantially degraded and doesn’t, at this stage, pose nearly the same type of threat that it used to. What has happened, over years, is that al-Qaida has metastasized. … So we’re having to deal with each of these cells. As you’ve seen, we’ve taken action in Yemen, we’ve taken action in Somalia, and now action is necessary in Syria.” The United States didn’t finish the job, so al-Qaida came back.
