The Obama administration has made a point of shrinking the military through budget and personnel cuts, all while informing us that the fight against ISIL may take years. Now, National Review’s Brendan Bordelon reports, “After submitting plans to drastically reduce defense spending earlier this year, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and General Martin Dempsey both agreed that the U.S. military will require additional funding in order to effectively combat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.” Hagel noted that U.S. airstrikes in Iraq and Syria and running between $7 and $10 million per day, and the total cost is approaching $1 billion so far. While that money comes from the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) budget, which was immune to the sequester cuts, the fund isn’t sufficient to achieve our objectives.
